In today's world, teenagers are constantly bombarded with messages about who they should be and how they should behave. Our new 4-week series, "A New Era - 2019," offers a transformative journey from behavior modification to identity transformation, focusing on living from one's true identity in Christ. This youth group lesson on identity and faith is designed to resonate deeply with your students and provide them with a fresh perspective on their spiritual journey.
Why Identity and Faith Matter for Today's Students
Today’s teenagers face immense pressure to conform to societal standards and expectations. According to Pew Research, anxiety and depression are prevalent among Gen Z, partly due to identity struggles exacerbated by social media. By focusing on identity and faith, we can help students navigate these pressures with a solid foundation in Christ, leading to healthier self-worth and a more resilient faith.

Week 1: Behave How You Believe
The scripture for this week is Genesis 3:8-11, focusing on Adam and Eve's fall. This passage illustrates how misplaced belief leads to shame and hiding. By using relatable examples like New Year's resolutions, you can connect with students and help them understand that what they believe defines how they behave. **Bottom Line:** What you believe determines how you behave.
Week 2: Marked
In Ephesians 1:13-14, Paul speaks about being marked by the Holy Spirit. This week, students will explore what it means to be marked by God versus marked by sin. Use the illustration of a fragile package to show the importance of living according to the mark of the Maker. **Bottom Line:** You are marked by the Maker.
Week 3: Caged Conviction
Based on 2 Corinthians 7:8-11, this week delves into the concept of conviction as a protective cage. Through the analogy of cages used for divers during Shark Week, students learn that conviction protects rather than punishes. **Bottom Line:** Conviction is a cage.
Week 4: Confront the Casual
This final week challenges students to evaluate the authenticity of their faith using Hebrews 11:1. Using a blindfolded chair exercise, students experience firsthand the difference between casual and genuine faith. **Bottom Line:** If your faith is casual, it probably isn't real faith.

Opening Hook
Have you ever made a New Year’s resolution? How long did it last? Most resolutions fail because they are based on desires, not beliefs.
Scripture Reading
Read Genesis 3:8-11 together as a group.
Teaching Points
In Genesis 3, Adam and Eve's belief in a lie led to shame and hiding. Their behavior was dictated by what they believed about themselves. This week, I want you to consider: what do you truly believe? Is it grounded in God or something else? **What you believe determines how you behave.** Many of us build strongholds of shame instead of living in the truth of who God says we are. Think about a lie you believed and how it changed your actions. Now, imagine the freedom of living from a place of truth.
